Medical Marijuana in Pennsylvania

Medical marijuana is slowly but surely becoming more and more accessible in the United States today. More than 40 states have actually legalized medical marijuana, and approximately 20 of those states have also legalized recreational weed as well. For spring break this year, my friends and I specifically wanted to travel to a destination in a state that has legalized recreational cannabis. While this means that we can’t go south to the warmer weather (since many southern states still have not legalized cannabis), we are going to Maine where we can smoke as much weed as we like. What about Pennsylvania?

We will be traveling through this state on our way to Maine, and I figured this would be a good time to talk about PA and their medical marijuana program. So firstly, is medical marijuana legal in PA? The answer is, unsurprisingly, yes. I say that this is unsurprising because most of the northern states have legalized medical marijuana, so it is safe to assume that of them. PA legalized medical cannabis in 2016, which is pretty early on compared to a lot of other states in the country. If you live in PA or are thinking about moving there, make sure that you read the rest of this article to learn more about using medical marijuana in that state!

While medical marijuana has been legal since 2016 in the state of Pennsylvania, that is not the case for recreational weed. There has been further lobbying by dispensaries and pro-cannabis organizations to legalize recreational marijauna, but so far these things have not been successful. However, since medical marijauna was legalized, more and more qualifying conditions have been added overtime to ensure that more people have access to cannabis if they really need it. However, legislation and policies in this state tell us that it will be very unlikely that Pennsylvania legalize recreational weed for quite some time.

Many states are not completely committed to making this push, but hopefully things will change as the cannabis industry continues to evolve and adapt. Once the federal government finally legalize weed, then it will be a game changer for all of us. So if you live in Pennsylvania and have your medical marijuana card, what sorts of products are available for you to use? Luckily for you I am going to list them right now so you don’t have to go look them up. Since medical marijuana has been legalized in 2016, dispensaries in the state can sell the following forms of cannabis: whole pants, cannabis flowers, dry leaves, vapors, oils, and liquids. Honestly, this is a pretty good spread for cannabis products, as far as medical marijauan programs go. Doctors can also prescribe medical marijuana in the form of pills and topicals, but these things are not available in a dispensary. INterestingly, it is illegal for dispensaries to sell edibles in the state of Pennsylvania, and I am not totally sure why that is. Another thing to keep in mind about using marijuana in PA is that it is not legal to smoke it with a bong or blunt. This might be disappointing to some (me included), but it is also worth mentioning that you can use a vape pen to smoke instead. Since I began using marijuana, I have always preferred to use a joint or a bowl when it comes down to it. However, I am glad marijuana patients in PA have limited access to smoking weed rather than none at all.

I hope that this article was helpful to you if you plan on moving out to Pennsylvania anytime soon. Make sure to come back next week to learn more about cannabis products, laws, and strains!
